Dokra art: A craft to treasure
Dokra is a term which is used to address craftsmen who travel constantly and are found in places like Odisha, Bengal and Madhya Pradesh. They are identified by their metal ornaments. Traditionally, Dokra art originated from the Dokra Tribe who manufacture intricate pieces of art. Dokra art is one of the oldest forms of metal casting as it was started 4,500 years back in the times of Mohenjo-Daro. These beautiful artifacts include accessories like lamp holders, lamps and chains. Beautiful tribal jewellery like bracelets, anklets and necklaces are also made by these artisans which denote India’s folklore and religion.
Dokra art pieces are made in an interesting manner. The craftsmen follow the traditional lost wax procedure. It starts with designing the clay and then layering it with wax, nut oil and resin. Wax is carved and the details are drawn again as the clay acts as a mould for the metal art pieces. The clay is cooked and the wax comes out of the drain ducts. Then the molten metal is poured inside the mould. When the metal takes it shape and has cooled, the outer layer of the clay is taken off. After that the metal art is polished. The mould can be used only once and two art pieces will not exactly be the same,
Dokra is a Bengali expression which is used to address people of the lower community. They are treated as social outcasts and often looked down upon. It is often believed that Dokra artisans need to meditate for hours till the image is ingrained in their minds.
Although this art was witnessing a downfall, it was revived by the NGO’s and the government. The government has put in considerable efforts in the revival of the artwork and the artisans. Various fashion houses in India and abroad are interested in utilizing and showcasing Dokra art. Technology is playing an integral part in the revival of this art as many e-commerce sites are keen on selling the work of the Dokra artisans. Their work will not be limited to just local markets but also will be seen in all corners of the country as well as in the world.
